Brazil is one of the biggest countries on Earth, with a continental size. However, Russia is widely known for being a gigantic place as well. It brings the question: Is Brazil bigger than Russia?
Brazil is not bigger than Russia. Brazil is a gigantic place, the fifth-largest country on Earth, with a total area of 3,287,956 mi². However, Russia is the biggest country in the world, with a full size of 6,601,668 mi². That represents about two times the size of Brazil.
Brazil or Russia: Who’s Bigger? (Infographic)
The biggest country of South America and fifth-largest on Earth, comparing the size of Brazil with pretty much any country is often unfair. However, this time, Brazil has a great (and huge) opponent: Russia. Let’s take a look at the numbers in the following table to check how big is Brazil compared to Russia.
Country | Total Area (Square Miles) | Total Area (Square Kilometers) |
Brazil | 3,287,956 mi² | 8,515,767 km² |
Russia | 6,601,668 mi² | 17,098,242 km² |
The numbers shown in the table above are enough to prove that Russia is 2 times bigger than Brazil. However, only numbers are not the best way to compare sizes. To solve this issue, we created a great infographic, highlighting the differences in the size between both countries. That’s also an excellent way to visualize how Brazil looks when superimposed on the Russian Federation territory on a real scale.

To create an accurate comparison, we needed to avoid any kind of distortions and problems. A common mistake that people do when comparing the size of countries, states, or cities is using Google Maps. As Google uses the Mercator projection, a 2D map projection that sacrifices size to maintain shape, their software it’s not the best option for this study.
Fortunately, we were able to learn about a special software (thetruesize.com) that corrects these flaws known as Mercator distortions. Using The True Size it’s possible to represent the actual size of Brazil compared to Russia in a clean, simple, and precise manner. What About Brazil has no relation and is not sponsored by this tool. But It’s just so great that I feel almost obligated to give a huge shoutout/recommendation to these guys. The software is free, and you can check and play around with the tools using this link.
